You might have decided that you want some type of career that involves flying, so you could be interested in going to flight school. You might be really excited about the things that you are going to learn and do while you're in flight school, but at the same time, you might not know what to expect at all. There are different flight schools with different programs, so what you read below might be a little bit different from your own experience. However, these are some of the things that you might want to be prepared for when it's time for you to start flight school.

You'll Spend a Lot of Time in a Classroom

You might be ready to hop in a plane as soon as possible. After all, the main thing that you might be excited about is actually flying. However, you should be prepared to spend quite a bit of time in the classroom. These are just some of the things that you should learn while in a classroom setting:

  • Regulations that you will be required to abide by when you become a pilot
  • Tips for how to plan flight patterns and routes
  • Tips about how to deal with various types of weather when you're handling flight planning or when you're flying
  • Things that you will need to do in order to get your pilot's license
  • Advice about communicating with air traffic control

If you're dreading the classroom aspect of flight school, you should know that it can be very educational. You should also know that many students find this part of flight school to be fun.

You'll Practice With a Simulator First

Many flight schools have simulators. These are considered to be a safe yet effective way to teach flight students about how to fly. Many people are surprised by just how realistic it is to use a flight simulator, and there's a good chance that you will spend many hours with a simulator before you ever step into an actual plane to practice flying.

You'll Need to Take Additional Steps to Get Your Pilot's License

Of course, while you're in flight school, you will be working on some of the first steps toward becoming a pilot. However, you will probably still be required to take additional steps before you can get your pilot's license. For example, you will probably be required to do things like undergo one or more medical exams and take an exam. The good news is that your flight school should let you know more about all of these steps and should provide guidance as you're working to get your pilot's license.
